British Virgin Islands Is the “Sailing Capital of the World,” According to Its New Trademark Filing – Caribbean Journal

The British Virgin Islands is taking ownership of its identity on the high seas. The territory has formally trademarked three sailing slogans, a move officials say will help anchor its brand as one of the world’s premier yachting destinations

The British Virgin Islands Tourist Board & Film Commission has registered new trademarks aimed at reinforcing the territory’s identity as a global sailing hub.

The marks — “The British Virgin Islands – Sailing Capital of the World™,” “British Virgin Islands – The Undisputed Sailing Capital of the Caribbean™,” and “The British Virgin Islands – Sailing Capital of the Caribbean™” — were formally registered under the Virgin Islands Trade Marks Act, 2013.

Each is valid for 10 years beginning May 7, 2024.

Tourism Director Clive McCoy said the move strengthens the territory’s positioning in international markets, where sailing remains a cornerstone of the BVI’s tourism product.

“Securing these trademarks is a powerful step in protecting our identity, strengthening our position in the international market and ensuring that travellers, sailors and partners alike associate the BVI with sailing excellence,” he said.

The initiative comes as the BVI continues to compete with rival Caribbean destinations investing in marinas and yacht tourism. The territory’s selling points include steady trade winds, sheltered anchorages and a longstanding yachting culture that has made it a magnet for charter companies and regattas.

Officials said the trademarks will feature prominently in future global marketing campaigns, designed to further cement the BVI as synonymous with sailing adventures and maritime leisure.
