Police are investigating a fatal accident that claimed the life of 34-year-old Yolanda John of Dartmouth, Essequibo Coast, after the motorcycle on which she was a pillion rider collided with a cow on Wednesday night.
The incident occurred around 19:30hrs along the Elisa Public Road, Essequibo Coast. John was a pillion rider on a motorcycle driven by her boyfriend, 23-year-old Leroy Prince, also of Dartmouth.
According to the police report, Prince told investigators that he had picked up John from work and was heading north when he saw a cow on the western side of the road. In an attempt to avoid hitting the animal, he swerved, but the motorcycle still struck the cow, causing him to lose control.
John was thrown from the motorcycle and fell onto the roadway, sustaining multiple injuries. She was taken to the Lima Regional Hospital, where she died while receiving treatment.
A breathalyser test conducted on Prince showed no trace of alcohol. The motorcycle has been impounded at the Anna Regina Police Station.
Prince has been taken into custody as investigations continue.
A post-mortem examination conducted today by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh found that John died from multiple injuries consistent with a motor vehicle accident.
