Final assessment ongoing on bridging Leguan and Wakenaam – INews Guyana
President Dr Irfaan Ali on Thursday revealed that “as I speak to you right now, our engineers are doing the final assessment for achieving something we all dreamt of, that is, bridging the islands of Leguan and Wakenaam”.
The government has been exploring the possibility of bridging the Essequibo Islands of Wakenaam and Leguan, utilising components of the old Demerara Harbour Bridge.
Currently, farmers in Leguan and Wakenaam would have to use ferries to bring their produce out to Parika to market. The additional transportation charges also affect the end price consumers pay for produce that could have been cheaper with decreased transportation costs.
A bridge connecting the two islands will not only improve the agriculture sector but will also boost the tourism potential in the region.
