Berbice man, previously remanded for abusing wife, gets bail – INews Guyana
A Berbice businessman who was previously remanded for allegedly abusing his wife, has been granted bail.
Karran Sukhan, a 25-year-old businessman of Lot 143 Number 2 Village, East Canje, Berbice made his first court appearance on June 13, before Magistrate Michelle Matthias where he was slapped with three charges.
He is charged with assault, causing actual bodily harm, use of threatening language and threatening behaviour against his reputed wife, Joanna Ramoutar.
He pleaded not guilty to all and was remanded.
When the case was called a second time on June 23, his attorney successfully mitigated for the accused to be granted pre-trial liberty.
Bail was was set at $50,000 for the assault charge, and $30,000 each for the other two charges.
Police had arrested Sukhan, who operates a taxi service, in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) after Ramoutar made a social media post claiming that she had endured six years of abuse and that she was living in fear.
The woman took to social media again on Wednesday expressing fear after learning that Sukhan was released on bail.
