Murdered: Adriel Aftab Mohamed

As investigations continue into the murder of 7-year-old Adriel Altab Mohamed and the attempted murder of his great-grandmother, detectives were able to secure a confession from the 23-year-old suspect.

This was confirmed by Deputy Commissioner of Police and Crime Chief, Wendell Blanhum, who related this evening that detectives confronted the suspect with compelling digital evidence that placed him at the crime scene. This led to the man confessing to the gruesome killing and provided detectives with a detailed account of when he entered the home and what transpired thereafter.

While the Crime Chief opted not to go into details, he revealed that the knife recovered at the crime scene was confirmed by the suspect as the weapon used to kill the boy and injure the 72-year-old woman.

In addition, the suspect, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol, also confirmed that before entering the victims’ home, he had entered a nearby yard in the area. However, he had to retreat after hearing movements inside the house. Blanhum indicated that in a haste to leave before an alarm was raised, the suspect left his slippers and a music player in that yard, which were recovered by the police and later identified by him as his belongings.

The 23-year-old suspect further confessed to investigators that after leaving the nearby yard, he broke into the victims’ Phase 3, Zeelugt New Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) home, where he committed the horrific acts.

This publication was told that detectives retrieved blood-stained clothing worn by the suspect during the attack. These will be submitted to the Forensic Science Laboratory along with other pieces of evidence for analysis.

According to the Crime Chief, the suspect went to his place of employment after committing the crime. His employer later told detectives that the young man showed up with a visible wound on his hand, which he did not have the day before. When questioned, he admitted that he received the cut while carrying out the heinous act.

The suspect was arrested one day after slashing the throat of the boy and stabbing the elderly woman in her neck during an apparent home invasion on Friday night.

The lifeless body of the child was found lying in a pool of blood, while his great-grandmother was found stabbed in the neck and lying on the ground in the house at about 05:05 on Friday. According to reports received, a relative went to the home, where he made the gruesome discovery.

The injured woman was taken to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where she was admitted as a patient. Her condition is listed as stable. On the other hand, the child suffered a gaping wound to his neck.
