The Eugene F. Correia International Airport, established some twenty-five (25) years ago in December 2001, when a consortium of local aviation operators entered into a long-term Lease Agreement with the Government to Build and Develop, Manage and Operate a Modern Domestic and International Airport in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. The Eugene F. Correia International Airport has grown from a small aviation facility for sugarcane crops dusting to become a fully-fledged commercial, domestic and international airport, serving today as one of the Caribbean Regions most dynamic and modern aviation gateway.
Recognizing Guyana’s growing economic and tourism potential, OAI initiated a major expansion programme in 2003 aimed at transitioning the airport into a fully certified international facility. Significant infrastructure upgrades included:
- Expansion of immigration and customs services
- Modernized air traffic management systems
- Enhanced safety and emergency response capabilities
- Runway extensions and airside improvements
- Expanded passenger handling and operational facilities
These developments laid the foundation for the airport’s emergence as a premier regional aviation hub.
A defining milestone was achieved in 2009 when the airport officially received Port of Entry status, enabling it to facilitate international arrivals and departures. This achievement strengthened Guyana’s regional and global connectivity while opening new opportunities for trade, investment, tourism, and business travel.
In his address to the Board of Directors as Chairman of the Board, Mr. Michael O. Correia Jnr., said that “the year demonstrated two important realities. First, domestic aviation demand in Guyana is expanding rapidly and sustainably. Second, the airport must continue investing aggressively to keep pace with the country’s broader economic transformation.”
Mr. Correia further pointed out that the airport’s domestic operations “delivered record performance in 2025, with passenger movements, aircraft activity, and cargo volumes all surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Most notably, domestic landings recorded the largest single-year increase in the airport’s history, reinforcing the airport’s growing importance in supporting commerce, tourism, healthcare access, hinterland connectivity, and national development.”
Mr. Correia observed that “one of the clearest themes emerging from the year’s results is the increasing importance of non aeronautical and commercial income to the airport’s long-term sustainability. Strong growth in land development revenue, commercial leases, concession activity, and fixed-income streams reflects the success of the airport’s broader commercial corridor strategy”. Emphasizing that this “is not incidental to the airport’s development – it is fundamental to it”, as he pointed out that “modern international airports cannot rely solely on aeronautical revenue to finance the scale of infrastructure required to support sustained growth, operational resilience, and compliance with evolving international aviation standards.”
Over the last year the airport transported some 267,503 domestic passengers, the strongest year on record, an increase of 14.6% over the previous year, and 73,119 international passengers, 10.7% less than the previous year, reflecting pandemic conditions.

Looking ahead, the airport has scheduled eleven (11) new capital projects totaling G$204M, strengthening perimeter security of the airport, expanding apron capacity for corporate jets and building out the airport’s commercial-corridor infrastructure.
