More than nine months after more than $400 million worth of raw gold was allegedly stolen from a business person, the Major Crimes Unit of the Guyana Police Force has launched an investigation.

In a statement this afternoon, the Police Force confirmed the alleged theft and announced that several persons including two Police officers are currently in custody assisting with the probe.

The Police said the theft of the bars of raw gold took place sometime between December 2021 and January 2022.

The Police would not say when it received an official report of the alleged theft, but indicated that investigators were able to recover two cars and a canter truck as well as a quantity of the raw gold as they continue their probe.

There are reports that the gold might have been stolen by workers during construction and repair works at a property and some of it was later sold to a major gold dealer in Georgetown.

The investigations are ongoing.
