‘A new high-span bridge under consideration for Berbice River’ – President Ali – Guyana Chronicle
EVEN now, the Dr Irfaan Ali administration is already considering the necessity of a new bridge across the Berbice River which would allow for a smoother flow of maritime operations, President, Dr Irfaan Ali said today.
Dr Ali is at Palmyra, East Berbice where a massive stadium which will be the first-of-its-kind in Berbice will be built. The sod was turned today at a far-from-simple ceremony witnessed by a large gathering of people.
The showers of blessings and goodness that will wash away all the falsehood, all the naysayers, and will clean the path for national development under the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government is here, President Ali said to a cheering crowd.
“How beautifully is the water that comes at the appropriate time as we celebrate the launch of another transformational moment in the history of Guyana,” Dr Ali said.
March 2023 marks three years since the efforts by the former A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) government to rig the 2020 general and regional elections.
Dr Ali told the crowd that through the struggle of concerned Guyanese citizens and commitment from the leaders of the PPP/C, Guyanese were able to restore the country’s democracy and stand in one common cause.
Reflecting on the life of the late former President, Dr Cheddi Jagan, President Ali said Dr Jagan’s soul must feel honoured as the sod turned today for the massive project, which was a 2020 campaign promise made by the PPP/C that is yet another project delivered on.
President Ali committed to reaching Guyanese across every social barrier regardless of their affiliation.
I see a ‘One Guyana’ banner of development with one people understanding the truth that there are talkers and there are doers, Dr Ali said expressing his pride to be part of a political party that builds and uplifts Guyanese.
“This is not TikTok, or TikTak,” the President quipped, a hint at one commentator whose positions have repeatedly been called into question.
The naysayers are trying to regroup, Dr Ali said, but this time they will be met by an army of people who have lived through the hardship and difficulty of five years under the APNU+AFC, and who are now feeling development.
In three years, the PPP/C government has worked to rebuild Guyana, President Ali said, adding that the vision is to ensure Guyanese, including Berbicians, benefit from world-class standards of living. “Nothing is going to stop us with the people by our side,” the President maintained.
The President said plans are already underway to ensure the Berbice River is completely accessible which would not be affected by a bridge that impedes the flow.
Acknowledging that the Berbice River bridge was necessary at the time of its construction, President Ali said thoughts are already being put into the possibility of a new high-span bridge across the river which would ensure continuous flow.
