‘Berbice first stadium costs more than APNU+AFC spent across entire region in five years’ – Guyana Chronicle
WHEN the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) campaigned in 2020, a promise was made to the Guyanese people to bring development to every corner of the country, but Guyanese must resist the naysayers and embrace development.
This was the charge made today by Vice President, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo during his address to a cheering crowd at the site marked for the first stadium for major activities in Berbice.
Nothing happens easily in Guyana, VP Jagdeo said, highlighting that when the Berbice River Bridge was built, there were persons who were against it. He charged that the bridge has now transformed the lives of Berbicians who previously waited for days for the ferry to cross the river.
Recalling a similar occurrence decades ago, the Vice President said when the decision was made to open a University of Guyana campus in Berbice, the criticism was that the PPP/C had undertaken the project to benefit its supporters.
The Tain campus, however, has gone on to serve people of the wider region regardless of age, race, gender, and political affiliation.
Turning attention to the Marriott Hotel investment in Georgetown, VP Jagdeo said critics claimed the project would be a white elephant, but one such prominent critic has now come out to criticize the government for opting to sell its shares in the hotel which is now seen as a lucrative investment.
A similar narrative existed for the Providence Stadium which is currently used to host the CPL games in Guyana. The Vice President highlighted these incidents to urge Guyanese to continue fighting for development against the many unwarranted criticisms and negative views.
With the part time employment project and GOAL scholarship as well as billions of dollars in capital expenditure over the years under the PPP/C, Berbice has seen an unprecedented period of development in just three years. This, the Vice President said, is part of government’s master plan for the region.
