Suspected Venezuelan “Pirates” nabbed in Guyana’s waters – News Source Guyana

Three Venezuelan men, who are susepected to be river “pirates” were arrested by local law enforcement off the coast of Guyana at Waini Point in the North West District after reports were received of Guyanese fishermen being attacked and robbed.

The Venezuelan nationals were nabbed with two shotguns and an arrow and bow.

In a joint operation between the Police and Coast Guard on Tuesday, the suspects were captured in the rough waters in Guyana during an attempt to flee to their homeland.

Local investigators found a boat and outboard engine in their possession that had been stolen from local fishermen.

A Police report explained that the Police and Coast Guard were alerted to the pirate attack after two fishermen complained to Police in Region One that early on Tuesday morning while they were asleep in their vessel just off the coast of Guyana, they were awaked by the three suspects who had guns pointed at them.

The fishermen were ordered off their boat and the Venezuelan pirates left the scene. They were rescued by another group of Guyanese fishermen in the area.

Once the Police and Coast Guard were alerted they mounted an operation in Guyana’s waters just off the coast where they spotted the stolen boat and the three suspects.

After being cornered by the local lawmen, the suspects reportedly jumped overboard, but were apprehended and eventually brought to shore after the stolen items were retrieved.

The names of the suspects have not been released, but the authorities say they have been confirmed to be Venezuelan nationals. The suspects are still in custody and a full investigation has been launched.
