Two years later, PSC to disburse $30m in Mahdia fire donations

Two years after the deadly Mahdia Secondary School dormitory fire that claimed the lives of 20 children, the Private Sector Commission (PSC) has said it will finally begin disbursing close to $30 million in donations that were collected in the aftermath of the tragedy.
The pledge was made during a recent interview with newly elected PSC Chairman, Gerald Gouveia Jr., who told the Stabroek Business that the distribution of the funds and in kind contributions will take place “within the coming weeks.” Gouveia added that supporting the affected families is “very high on my priority list.”
The funds totalling $29,941,375 were collected from private sector members to assist the families and communities impacted by the fire. However, no part of this amount has yet been disbursed, raising concern and criticism over the PSC’s handling of the relief effort.
