PPP preparing young people for the future – Jagdeo tells Lindeners – INews Guyana

Guyana’s Vice President and General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Dr Bharrat Jagdeo received a warm welcome in the town of Linden, Region Ten on Friday as he addressed a large gathering of citizens during an outreach.

Speaking about his party’s accomplishments over the years, he highlighted that the PPP has always been and continues to prepare young people for leadership.

“My party recognises young people… I wanted more young people to take the leadership of the country,” he said, highlighting that he was a product of such futuristic decision-making, having served as a Minister of Finance and then President of Guyana in his 20s and 30s.

Jagdeo pointed out that during his tenure as president, 70 percent of his cabinet were below 50 years old while the current president is only 45-year-old with several years of experience as a Government Minister and parliamentarian.

Noting that education, jobs and skills training remain at the top of his party’s agenda, the GS and current Vice President highlighted investments in offering 39,000 scholarships through various platforms, introducing free tertiary education and increasing access to internet to allow people to study remotely.

Through these opportunities, he urged the citizens of Region Ten to further their education, especially along the lines of future developmental plans.

“If you do a GOAL scholarship now on even management, you could easily land a job in one of those hotel being built…there are plenty avenues for jobs. Like in the future, our plans for smart agriculture, many of you can find a job in that,” he outlined.

“In this region, if you are not studying, you need to start,” Jagdeo added.

Speaking about PPP opponents in the PNC and AFC, Jagdeo said there are no plans coming from that side of the political divide but rather announcements to increase what is already being offered.

“They want to out-compete. You’ve never heard of them speaking about a plan to create wealth, education, healthcare of jobs. They just say we will give you more and more. In 2015, they made a lot of promises, nothing was delivered,” he reminded.

“A politician’s credibility is based on how well they kept their promises,” he added.

The Vice President further highlighted missteps under the People’s National Congress Reform including of attempts to rig elections.

“Whether you are PPP, PNC or AFC, once you lose the freedom to choose your government, then you lose a part of yourself because the government that is there will be unaccountable,” Jagdeo said.

He went on to outline several plans for development across the country including Region Ten, including some projects which have started such as the paving of the Soesdyke to Linden Highway, construction of roads and bridges along the Linden to Lethem road and opening of new house lots in the region.

“The prosperity that you are getting now will grow tenfold in the future and will not disappear due to bad government policies and that is why we stress sustainability,” he assured the residents gathered in the town on Friday.

“In this region, young people must get a plot of land…There will be technical and other supports for those starting businesses…This region will change immeasurably. We’re connecting this region with the rest of the country in a major way,” Jagdeo said.

The Vice President also highlighted expansion of the healthcare, tourism, cyber security, agriculture, infrastructure development and other sectors, which he said provides numerous jobs for Guyanese.
