President vows to make sugar `great again’

-in fiery Enmore Martyrs Day address

In a thunderous, campaign-like address at the Enmore Martyrs Monument yesterday, President Irfaan Ali promised to “make sugar great again!” and build a prosperous Guyana where “no one is left behind.”

On the 77th anniversary of the five Enmore Martyrs’ deaths, after laying wreaths at the monument, Ali delivered a 50-minute address, explaining his vision for GuySuCo’s expanded role as a “hub of rural economic development.” He proposed leveraging its land, infrastructure, and skilled workforce to support other crops like rice, corn, and cassava, as well as livestock operations, agro-processing, and engineering services. He declared a future of “crop diversification, skills diversification, income diversification,” with plans to co-invest with workers in new economic activities, creating “tens of thousands of new jobs.”

Ali continued by thanking the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) and its workers for publicly endorsing the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C). He underscored that the party views such support not lightly, but as “motivation to recommit ourselves once more to the cause of every Guyanese, to the cause of every worker.” This endorsement was earlier given by Seepaul Narine, President of GAWU, who, addressing the crowd, stated, “..against that background, on behalf of the Executive Committee on Membership of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers’ Union, I proudly and unequivocally endorse President Mohamed Irfaan Ali and the PPP/C for a second term in government.”
