Adriana Younge laid to rest amid heavy grief and calls for justice
In a display of collective grief and unwavering demand for justice, hundreds of mourners, many adorned in symbolic red shirts, gathered yesterday to bid farewell to 11-year-old Adriana Sueria Younge. The Grade Six pupil of Parika Salem Primary School was laid to rest at the Vergenoegen Cemetery follow-ing an emotional funeral service at the Vergenoegen tarmac, preceded by a viewing at Sandy’s Funeral Home in Pouderoyen.
Adriana’s life was tragically cut short. Two months ago, on April 24, she was found deceased at the Double Day Hotel. Her passing ignited a massive outcry, uniting thousands in person and online both here and overseas.
The day of remembrance for Adriana, who was recalled as a beacon of love, gentleness, and intellectual promise, commenced before 8 AM, as a sea of red-clad individuals converged at Sandy’s Funeral Home for the viewing. The air was heavy with sorrow, punctuated by impassioned chants of “Justice for Adriana!”. At precisely 11 AM, her casket was placed in the hearse beginning its journey to pass by her family home in Parika and then to the tarmac.
At the Vergenoegen tarmac, the gathering swelled to hundreds more, sheltered under tents adorned with delicate pink flowers and drapes. The funeral service, which concluded at 4 PM, was a cascade of heartfelt tributes, poignant poems, and a powerful eulogy that resonated deeply with all present.
