US warns about gold smuggling from Venezuela
-Ali says Guyana taking action
Following concerns raised by the United States, Guyana last evening notified that it was putting measures in place to tackle gold being smuggled here from Venezuela to mix with this country’s metal.
“Only today the US reminded all of its partners about the serious threat with Venezuela, as it relate to both smuggling, and we have received that advisory today, and we’ve received that advisory today and we want you to know that we’re putting enormous resources into ensuring that the threat of illicit gold smuggling, that can help to empower or safeguard undemocratic forces, are uprooted with our partnership,” President Irfaan Ali last night said in his address at the US’s 4th of July celebrations held at its Ambassador Nicole Theriot’s home.
According to Ali, the US’ Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs has initiated ongoing efforts to enhance law enforcement and security cooperation between Washington and Georgetown and countries in the Caribbean, though the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on March of this year when US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited.
