President details national poverty reduction in Facebook live address

President Irfaan Ali

President Irfaan Ali yesterday detailed a national strategy aimed at tackling poverty and improving the quality of life for all Guyanese over the next five years. The approach, according to him, would link poverty reduction directly to economic growth, expanded social safety nets, and enhanced access to essential services.

“In addressing poverty, we have to look at economic growth from a wide perspective,” Ali stated in a Facebook live address. He pointed to the administration’s achievements over the past five years, including the reversal of over 200 taxes and a commitment to no new taxes or tax increases. He also noted the expansion of social programmes covering diverse segments of the population, from vulnerable communities to children, women, and pensioners.

Looking ahead, the President stressed the importance of a “systemic way” to address these issues comprehensively. “The policies and systems that we build would address holistically the long-term challenges and create economic growth, expansion and allow a social safety net to be built around opportunities for the poor,” he said. Ali further detailed a plan to alleviate financial burdens on households and foster economic empowerment across various sectors.
