GECOM approves recount of 77 boxes from Reg. 5; 101 boxes already recounted from Reg. 4 – INews Guyana
The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has approved the recount of 77 ballot boxes from Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), following a request submitted by the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).
INews understands that the ballot boxes are en route to GECOM’s Barrack Street location, where the recount of ballot boxes from Region Four’s sub-district four (East Coast of Demerara) is currently ongoing.
That exercise, which was also requested by APNU, will see 391 ballot boxes being recounted.
As of 17:30hrs, a total of 101 ballot boxes were recounted, according to GECOM Commissioner Sase Gunraj. There are 25 workstations.
It is estimated that the entire recount process would be completed either Saturday or Sunday.
In an earlier update on the process so far, Gunraj had noted that the recount yielded no significant changes to the declared results for Region Four.
The PPP/C, for the first time in the country’s history, has taken control of Region Four. In the general elections, the PPP/C secured a remarkable 87,536 votes, while in the regional elections it received 87,018.
APNU’s support plummeted to just 46,956 votes in the general elections and 46,772 in the regional. WIN secured 41,607 votes in the general elections and 41,930 in the regional elections.
After an entire morning of recounting, nothing has changed – Gunraj
