France yesterday reaffirmed its commitment to Guyana’s territorial sovereignty and offered cooperation through a number of areas which include access to air and sea radar systems to assist with monitoring this country’s porous borders, to prevent not only a possible incursion by Venezuela but to fight all levels of crime.
“It is evident that due to this tense situation with Venezuela that Guyana needs to acquire equipment to do surveillance and the only country around that has the capacity to cooperate and to bring support is France,” visiting Chair of France’s Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Armed Forces, Senator Cédric Perrin said at a press conference held at the Embassy yesterday.
Perrin led a delegation comprising of his Deputy André Guiol and Olivier Cigolotti member of the Senate Committee, Jeanne Mengotti from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Colonel Emmanuel Rigault, and other officials. They met with President Irfaan Ali, Chief of Defence of the Guyana Defence Force, Brigadier Omar Khan and ministers of government.
