President Irfaan Ali announced yesterday that the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) has implemented relief measures to assist affected farmers and residents of several Black Bush Polder communities and surrounding areas on the Corentyne Coast which remain flooded in the wake of persistent rainfall.

The affected communities include Lesbeholden, Mibicuri, Johanna and Yakusari, where Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha visited yesterday to meet farmers and assess the situation on the ground.

Residents have complained that the current event has once again exposed long-standing drainage problems and left crops, yards and livelihoods at risk. They said the flooding was far from a new problem and argued that visits and promises had not translated into lasting relief.
