The Hydrometeorological Service advises that unstable atmospheric conditions are expected to affect Guyana from April 22 to 25, 2026, resulting in widespread rainfall and an increased risk of flooding, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained areas. While atmospheric conditions are very dynamic, the latest model outputs indicate that Regions 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are likely to receive the highest amounts of rainfall during this period.

Unstable atmospheric conditions associated with a surface trough are expected to begin affecting Guyana from the evening of April 21st into the early morning of April 22nd, 2026. Thereafter, a gradual strengthening and oscillation of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) over the country will persist throughout the remainder of the week. These conditions are likely to be further enhanced by strong upper-level divergence.

These combined factors are contributing to increased cloudiness, frequent showers, periods of moderate to heavy rainfall, and isolated to scattered thunderstorms.

Unsettled conditions are forecast to continue for the remainder of the week, as meteorological models indicate that the projected atmospheric conditions will remain in place. While there are some indications of a temporary reduction in rainfall activity over coastal areas on Thursday, other parts of the country are still expected to experience cloudiness, showers, and possible thunderstorms due to ongoing instability. Rainfall amounts are likely to average between 50mm (~2 inches) and 75mm (~3 inches) in 24 hours; however, some areas may record more than 100mm (~4 inches) in 24 hours.)
