90 people applied to Guyana Emergency Medical Services – Min Anthony
The Ministry of Health has received 90 responses from persons interested in joining the new Guyana Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) programme.
Minister of Health, Frank Anthony, said on Friday during an interview with the Department of Public Information(DPI) that the applicants are expected to begin training within the next two weeks as the government advances plans to establish a modern emergency medical response system across the country.
The initiative is being developed in partnership with Northwell Health and aims to improve emergency response times by strategically deploying ambulances along the coast.
The health minister explained that while the training is underway, the ministry has already begun sourcing additional ambulances to support the programme.
“Our intent is to buy a number of ambulances that we can pre-deploy,” Dr Anthony explained.
According to him, the GEMS headquarters will be located at Liliendaal, at the site of the Infectious Diseases hospital, commonly known as the COVID-19 hospital, where emergency operations will be coordinated.

“They would be able to have total control of all the ambulances that we are deploying,” the health minister noted.
He said the government expects the ambulances to arrive within the next few months and that a formal launch of the service will follow once personnel have completed their training.
The GEMS programme forms part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and ensure faster access to emergency medical care nationwide.
