Emancipation Day celebrations unite Guyanese in culture, commerce, heritage
Thousands of Guyanese gathered at the National Park on Saturday to commemorate Emancipation Day, celebrating African heritage through culture, music, food, fashion and locally made products.
The annual observance drew families, entrepreneurs, cultural groups and visitors who embraced the opportunity to honour the struggles and achievements of their ancestors while showcasing Guyana’s rich traditions.
Among the exhibitors was local entrepreneur Leisa Gibson, owner of Lisa Salon and Beauty Supplies, who spoke to the Department of Public Information (DPI) and said the celebration provided an important platform for Guyanese-made products.
“It means celebration as a nation, and for me it means getting to meet a lot of people. People get to see the person who manufactures the products and interact with us,” Gibson said.
She noted that the event also inspires young people by exposing them to successful locally manufactured products, including her company’s line of hair, skincare and soap products.
Founder of For Me, For You Fragrance and Creation, Ariello Sutherland, described the event as an opportunity to reconnect with African heritage while learning more about the country’s diverse cultural traditions.
She added that the celebration held special significance as it coincided with what would have been her late grandmother’s birthday, making the occasion both emotional and meaningful.
Meanwhile, patron Angel [only name given] said the observance serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and continued personal growth.
“For me, it’s for us to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery and let’s all try to live with love and unity,” she expressed.
The National Park came alive throughout the day with cultural performances, traditional African cuisine, exhibitions by local artisans and entrepreneurs, and educational displays highlighting the history and legacy of Emancipation in Guyana.
The annual celebration continues to serve as a vibrant expression of national pride while promoting cultural preservation, community togetherness and support for local businesses.
