Government expands employment, business opportunities for Sophia Residents
Residents of Sophia were on Friday sensitised about new and existing opportunities available through the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security to improve their livelihoods, as the government continues efforts to expand access to employment, training and entrepreneurship at the community level.
During a community meeting at the Sophia Community Centre, Minister of Human Services and Social Security Dr Vindhya Persaud engaged residents on several initiatives being advanced by the Government, including the Care Economy Initiative and opportunities available through the Guyana Development Bank.
The Care Economy Initiative is aimed at strengthening the support available to children and elderly persons, while simultaneously creating employment opportunities for persons interested in providing care within their communities.
Under the initiative, interested residents can be trained to become caregivers, equipping them with the necessary skills to provide quality care and support to those who need it most.
The government will also provide support to caregivers under the programme, including financing in some areas, equipment, facility improvements and learning materials to ensure they are adequately equipped to deliver these services.
Minister Persaud encouraged Sophia residents to take advantage of the initiative, noting that it provides an opportunity for persons to earn an income while responding to an important need within their own community.
Separately, residents were also informed on the Guyana Development Bank and the financing opportunities it provides for Guyanese seeking to establish or expand businesses.
The minister encouraged residents to examine the various programmes, training opportunities and services already being offered through her ministry and consider how the skills and support acquired through those programmes could be transformed into viable business ventures.
Residents with potential business ideas can then explore the financing opportunities available through the Guyana Development Bank to help move those ideas from concept to operation or expand existing enterprises.
The engagement formed part of the Government’s wider effort to ensure citizens at the community level are aware of, and can directly benefit from, programmes designed to create employment, encourage entrepreneurship and improve the quality of life for Guyanese families.
Dr Persaud also outlined plans to expand recreational and support services in Sophia, including the establishment of youth spaces and an additional community centre.
These facilities will complement programmes aimed at engaging and empowering young people within the community.
