‘We must have faith and cultural pride’ as Heritage Month begins – Min Browne-Shadeek
The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs on Monday hosted an interfaith service at the Umana Yana to usher in Amerindian Heritage Month 2026, being observed under the theme, “Observing our Cultural Heritage during our Diamond Jubilee.”
Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Sarah Browne Shadeek, said the annual service provides an opportunity to give thanks for the past year while seeking divine guidance and blessings for the period ahead.
“This interfaith ceremony is traditional for us every year before the official start of September, which we observe as Amerindian Heritage Month. We give thanks to God for allowing us to pass another year and we also pray for blessings ahead,” the minister said.
Minister Browne Shadeek acknowledged the difficult circumstances faced by many families following the sinking of the M.V. Barima, which resulted in loss of lives and continues to affect survivors and relatives of those who perished.
She noted that despite the challenges, significant investments continue to drive progress in Amerindian communities, particularly in health, education, infrastructure and social development.
The minister emphasised the importance of Heritage Month in providing Indigenous communities with a platform to showcase their culture, traditions and talents, particularly through the participation of cultural groups and young people.
Among the major activities planned are the Heritage Games and the Amerindian Heritage Pageant, which will bring participants from across the country to Georgetown.
“We want to pray for blessings on the country so that the year ahead will be one of less accidents, less mishaps and less unfortunate circumstances, and we look to God for His blessings, His guidance and protection always,” Minister Browne Shadeek said.
She also noted the growing appreciation for Indigenous culture, observing that Amerindian heritage is now embraced with greater pride and recognition across Guyana.
The service brought together religious leaders, members of the diplomatic community, representatives of the National Toshaos Council, ministry staff, cultural groups and other stakeholders ahead of the month long observances.
Meanwhile, Minister of Education Sonia Parag and Member of Parliament Alister Charlie were among those in attendance.
The official opening of Amerindian Heritage Month is scheduled for Tuesday, September 1.
