Chancellor (ag) urges gov’t compliance on financial autonomy for judiciary
-AG bemoans failure of courts to apply key laws
Addressing the opening of Law Year 2026, Attorney General Anil Nandlall SC yesterday criticised the failure of the courts to apply key pieces of modern legislation and the Chancellor of the Judiciary (acting) Roxane George SC called for the honouring of constitutional provisions that address the financial autonomy of the judiciary.
Speaking at the High Court, Chancellor George said, “Most importantly, I reiterate, the judiciary looks forward to full compliance with Article 122A of the Constitution of Guyana, it being a fully self-accounting entity, which manages its technical processes regarding how its budgetary allocation is spent…Therefore, full implementation of the fiscal management provisions is necessary to fulfill the constitutional mandate and retain all leadership in this regard”.
Article 122A (2) of the Constitution says “Subject to the provisions of articles 199 and 201, all courts should be administratively autonomous and shall be funded by a direct charge upon the Consolidated Fund; and such courts shall operate in accordance with the principles of sound financial and administrative management”.
