Three charged with murder of Chinese businessman at Cumberland

Three males including a juvenile were yesterday charged with the murder of 61-year-old Chinese businessman Chen Yongping.

Pieter Baker, a 29-year-old pump operator of Fort Ordnance, East Canje, Berbice; Colwin “Screech” Morris, a 29-year-old labourer of Cumberland Village, East Canje, Berbice and a 17-year-old boy were charged with murder. The trio appeared yesterday at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Michelle Matthias where the charge was read to them.

They were not required to plead. Baker and Morris were remanded to prison, while the juvenile was sent to the Juvenile Holding Centre.

The matter was adjourned to Tuesday, January 14, 2026.

On December 22, 2025, during an armed robbery Yongping  was murdered.

On December 29, 2025, the three suspects were arrested in connections with the robbery and murder.

Police Commander Shiv-persaud Bacchus had said that Chen Donrong, and Yongping operated a crispy snack business at the Cumberland Village location. Various types of chips are made.
