President, Rubio discuss bolstering bilateral security ties
President Irfaan Ali and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio today discussed strengthening bilateral security among other matters.
A readout from the State Department follows:
The following is attributable to US Department of State Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott:
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke today with Guyanese President Irfaan Ali to discuss further strengthening bilateral security cooperation.
He commended President Ali for his leadership as a regional security partner and for Guyana’s growing role in promoting stability across our hemisphere.
The Secretary reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to deepening security cooperation with Guyana to address shared challenges, including illicit narcotics and firearms trafficking, which threaten regional stability and economic resilience.
Both leaders underscored the importance of continued collaboration to disrupt foreign terrorist organizations and transnational criminal networks while strengthening law enforcement capabilities and border security.
The discussion follows the United States’ airstrikes on Venezuela on Saturday and the capture of its President Nicolas Maduro. The action has evoked widespread condemnation for the breach of international law and the sovereignty of Venezuela.
Guyana has remained silent on the attack, the breach of Venezuelan sovereignty and the seizing of Maduro.
