CJ to rule February 2nd on challenge to Mohameds extradition proceedings

Following lengthy arguments yesterday, Chief Justice (ag) Navindra Singh is to rule on February 2, 2026 on an application by counsel for gold traders Azruddin Mohamed and Nazar Mohamed challenging the authority to proceed which had been issued by Home Affairs Minister Oneidge Walrond to an extradition request by the United States.

The Fixed Date Application had followed a denial of a request by Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman to refer  a series of issues to the High Court before the extradition proceedings are heard.  The extradition hearings are to continue before Magistrate Latchman on February 5th.

During a tense court hearing on Wednesday, defence attorney Siand Dhurjon pointed to what he described as “two layers of bias” affecting both the Minister and the Attorney General (Anil Nandlall SC).
