Nazar Mohamed calls on Nadir to apologise to Azruddin Mohamed
Gold trader Nazar Mohamed today released a letter calling on Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir to apologise to his son, Azruddin Mohamed over remarks made in a national broadcast on Tuesday.
Nadir drew parallels between Azruddin Mohamed’s expected swearing in as Leader of the Opposition with the late Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar among other attacks.
Both Mohameds have been indicted by the US on various counts relating to gold trading and other areas. Extradition proceedings are currently under way against both of them.
Azruddin Mohamed’s party We Invest in Nationhood won 25% of the vote at the September 1st 2025 General and Regional Elections.
Nazar Mohamed’s letter follows:
Letter to the Honourable Manzoor Nadir,
Speaker of the National Assembly of Guyana
Re: Your abusive, false, defamatory and malicious statements concerning Azruddin Mohamed
Honourable Speaker,
I write this letter with deep disappointment and outrage following your purported Address to the Nation delivered on Tuesday, January 20th, 2026, in which you chose to make reckless, abusive, and defamatory statements about Azruddin Mohamed, the presumptive Leader of the Opposition.
As you know very well, I have consistently refrained from engaging in political commentary and stick to the issues at hand all politics removed. However, what you uttered went far beyond politics. Your dangerous and destructive references to Pablo Escobar, to drugs, and to criminality were not only disgraceful, they were deliberate lies, calculated to mislead the public and poison the national discourse.
Your utterances and those from President Irfaan Ali, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo and Attorney General Anil Nandlall are all allegations which are complete and total fabrications; allegations about drugs, Colombian connections, Russian connections and all these strange allegations. The U.S. authorities have never confirmed these allegations ever existed.
If the Government of Guyana possesses any credible evidence to support the slander you repeated, why has no action been taken? Why no charges? Why no prosecution? The answer is because no such evidence exists.
The facts are plain and publicly documented. The OFAC designation and related indictment refer solely to an alleged tax matter. They do not allege drug trafficking. They do not allege narcotics proceeds. They do not allege cartel activity. They do not allege trafficking of any nature. Furthermore, Azruddin Mohamed is alleged to own 10% of the shares of the company, but the actual fact is that he has nothing to do with the referenced company. He has never received a salary from the company for any services. He has his own separate business. These facts are not in dispute.
You are also well aware that the widely circulated Reuters article which focused extensively on Azruddin Mohamed was followed by a completed investigation in which nearly all of the sensational claims were never reflected in the final allegations. What began as a sprawling narrative was ultimately reduced to minimal, unproven allegations, with 99% of the insinuations never forming part of any charge.
Yet despite this, you chose to repeat the most vile insinuations from the podium of the Speaker of the National Assembly, an office that demands neutrality, restraint, and respect for truth.
What makes this even more offensive is the personal dimension. You know, Honourable Speaker, that Azruddin Mohamed has been nothing but respectful and supportive toward you and your family for many years. I myself have always treated you with decency and goodwill and have been very good to you and your family, the extent to which needs no description. Your words were a personal betrayal.
I take this matter very personally, and I find your statements highly offensive.
As Speaker, you have a constitutional duty to uphold fairness, dignity, and integrity. Instead, you weaponized your office to spread blatant lies and character assassination. That conduct is unbecoming of your role and corrosive to public trust.
Accordingly, I call on you to issue a full and unqualified public apology to Azruddin Mohamed and to the people of Guyana for the false, malicious, and defamatory statements you made.
Guyana deserves better than reckless innuendo from the Chair of its Parliament. Manzoor, what happened to truth and integrity? Have these principles completed vanished from the PPP and those entrusted with the highest offices in our democracy? Are they no more?
Sincerely,
Nazar Mohamed
