Works under way for US$20m sugar refinery at Wales

The Hamilton, Ontario, Canada plant that will be brought here to Guyana

Works have begun at the old Wales Estate site on the West Bank of Demerara for its transformation into the US$20 million cane sugar refinery for Demerara Sugar Refinery Inc (DSR) – the private sector joint venture last year signed between with GAICO Construction & General Services Inc. and North American sugar refiner, Sucro.

When the Sunday Stabroek visited the area last week, already the forested port site on the west bank of the Demerara River was being cleared and prepared for rebuilding and over the road at the old Wales plant the bushy area was being cut and derelict machinery was being dismantled and cleared away.

Sucro has announced that through the sale of its operating refinery assets in Hamilton, Canada, to DSR, that refinery will be shipped here to Guyana to operate at Wales.

“It will be here around April. We are doing the demolition because you know we need to take down the old sugar estate.  After that we will do the foundation for the plant around April/May because some of its components are coming from China and India,” DSR local partner, Komal Singh, told the Sunday Stabroek when contacted.
