US prioritizing election help to Guyana amid aid cuts – Theriot
-agri project likely to be discontinued
The United States is prioritizing support for Guyana’s upcoming elections despite widespread cuts to foreign aid under the Donald Trump administration, US Ambassador Nicole Theriot has confirmed.
Speaking to the media yesterday, Theriot stated that while US funding for various programmes has been affected, elections assistance remains a top priority, with efforts underway to secure the necessary approvals.
“The high-priority programme is our election support; we actually hadn’t commenced yet because we are waiting for that funding,” Theriot said. “We have requested that they give us as quickly as possible—approval. We want to give assistance to GECOM, we want to set up an election observation mission, and we want to be as helpful as we can in Guyana’s democracy.”
