2 buildings destroyed in Sheet Anchor fire – INews Guyana
A fire believed to have been started by a four-year-old who was left alone at home has destroyed two buildings in Sheet Anchor, East Canje, Berbice leaving eight persons homeless.
The Friday afternoon blaze quickly spread through the wooden structures, forcing residents to flee as neighbours and firefighters tried to contain the flames.
Subrina Yadram and Jeffrey Fraser occupied the house where the fire reportedly started.
Yadram, a security guard who was at work at the time, said she returned to find the house engulfed in flames and most of their belongings destroyed.
Fraser said his four-year-old son was alone at home when the fire started. He explained that he had briefly left the building and was returning when he noticed smoke and flames coming from the upper section of the house.
Residents in the area said a young boy from the community rushed into the burning building and brought the four-year-old child to safety moments before the flames intensified.
The fire eventually spread to a neighbouring building owned by Phulmattee Madramoottoo, who said she had recently purchased new furniture and household items for the home she had occupied for decades.
She explained that while efforts were being made to contain the first building, the flames later crossed over and destroyed much of her property.
Madramoottoo said although some vehicles were removed from the property before the flames intensified, much of the household furniture and personal belongings were destroyed.
Firefighters later managed to contain the blaze before it spread to additional nearby buildings.
Investigations are ongoing.
