Press Release: Guyana to invest heavily in orange economy – President Ali
His Excellency President Dr Irfaan Ali recently announced a major push to establish Guyana’s orange economy as a world class creative destination, signalling a decisive step in the country’s diversification strategy.
Speaking at the US–Guyana Business Exchange Reception in Houston, Texas, President Ali told investors that Guyana is ready to partner with international film producers, content creators, and cultural entrepreneurs to accelerate the growth of this sector.
“We want Guyana to be a mega hub of culture, entertainment, and sport. We are going to invest heavily in the orange economy. We want to be the destination for movies, Netflix series…”.
The President underscored that the orange economy — encompassing film, media, music, fashion, and sport — is a fertile sector for collaboration. He invited global creators to join forces with local talent and Government agencies to shorten the timeline for development and leapfrog Guyana into a premier creative hub.
Guyana’s diverse landscapes, pristine terrain, and cultural richness were highlighted as unique assets for film and television production. Shows such as Naked and Afraid and Survivor, he noted, could be filmed locally, while exclusive projects such as The Life of Hakeem Olajuwon could be produced in Guyana.
President Ali emphasised that the Government’s commitment is not to incremental progress but to rapid transformation.
“We can’t go in a linear fashion. We have to leapfrog to that destination. We have to use every available tool to save us 30 years of straight line development.”
While Guyana remains open to other investments, the administration has identified the orange economy as one of the strategic pillars in reducing dependency on oil and gas.
By investing in the orange economy, the Government aims to generate more jobs, foster innovation, and enhance Guyana’s global cultural footprint.
