On-campus housing at GTTC to improve access to specialised training – INews Guyana

Persons seeking to further their studies at the Guyana Technical Training College in Port Mourant, Region Six, will soon benefit from accommodation being made available at the institution.

Director of the college, Professor Clement Sankat, said the residence is expected to be completed by the end of this year or early next year.

The facility will accommodate up to 100 students from across the regions, allowing more young people to access specialised training opportunities.

Professor Clement Sankat told the Department of Public Information (DPI) last Friday that the residential campus is being designed to fully support students throughout their studies by providing accommodation, meals and other amenities on-site.

“They will be fully taken care of in terms of food, board, lodging and meals, all living on campus,” he assured.

The initiative is expected to particularly benefit students from rural and hinterland communities who may otherwise face challenges accessing specialised technical education opportunities.

The campus is also expected to create economic opportunities for surrounding communities, as some students may opt for off-campus housing.

“Some students may prefer to live off-campus in the town of Port Mourant…and that is also very good because it brings business to the town surrounding the campus,” he explained.

Professor Sankat said the broader vision is to transform Port Mourant into a major hub for technical education and regional development.

Commissioned in February 2026, the US$120 million Guyana Technical Training College is a key part of Guyana’s strategy to develop skilled human capital for the energy sector.

It features The FacTor, a US$13 million simulator replicating a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, and offers an 18-month residential programme leading to an Advanced Diploma in Oil and Gas.

The facility offers an 18-month residential programme leading to an Advanced Diploma in Oil and Gas. Training is delivered across core technical disciplines, including electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, and production operations, with a strong focus on offshore oil and gas systems and FPSO operations through hands-on simulation-based learning.
