Guyana’s crude becoming increasingly important in Global energy markets – Pres Ali

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali says Guyana is becoming increasingly important in global energy markets as geopolitical conflicts continue to reshape international oil trade and energy security strategies.

When he was asked at his press conference on Friday whether countries have approached Guyana for crude supply arrangements amid ongoing global tensions and shifting market dynamics, he acknowledged that major geopolitical developments, including the Russia-Ukraine war, triggered significant realignments within the global oil and gas sector, leading countries to seek more stable and reliable energy suppliers.

He explained that the expanding oil production in Guyana has placed the country in a strategically advantageous position, attracting heightened international interest.

“This is a normal occurrence anywhere you go; there is extreme interest in Guyana’s crude,” President Ali stated.

The Head of State noted that countries are increasingly viewing energy resources as strategic geopolitical tools capable of influencing political and economic relationships.

According to President Ali, while global demand for Guyana’s crude continues to rise, the government remains focused on safeguarding the country’s long-term interests rather than pursuing short-term gains during periods of global instability, and the government is carefully balancing opportunities in spot markets against the importance of maintaining long-term market stability and sustainable pricing arrangements.

“We have to balance that against long-term sustainability, having long-term pricing,” the President explained.

He added that the government continues to rely on technical evaluations and expert guidance to ensure decisions related to Guyana’s oil resources are made in the country’s best interest.

From a geopolitical standpoint, the President said Guyana’s oil reserves are helping strengthen the country’s international relationships. It will position itself as a more significant player in regional and global energy discussions.

In addition to oil, President Ali said Guyana’s mineral resources are also attracting growing international attention because of their critical role in renewable energy technologies and future energy systems.
